CIP, Blueyou Team Up to Develop Indonesia Blue Carbon Projects

Ecobiz.asia – Climate Investment Partners (CIP), a global developer of nature-based climate solutions, and sustainable seafood company Blueyou have signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop mangrove restoration and sustainable coastal livelihood projects in Indonesia.

The partnership will combine mangrove restoration, blue carbon and community-based Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture (IMA) in projects designed to generate climate, biodiversity and socioeconomic benefits.

The projects are expected to be developed under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards (CCBS).

The two companies said the partnership aims to combine carbon finance with regenerative aquaculture to create scalable models that restore coastal ecosystems while supporting local economies.

“Our mission has always been to empower local communities through innovative nature-based solutions,” James Eaton, Founder and CEO of Climate Investment Partners, said in a statement (Aug. 19, 2026).

“This collaboration with Blueyou brings together world-class expertise in carbon markets, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable aquaculture to create projects that generate lasting value for communities while helping address climate change,” he said.

Indonesia is home to about one-fifth of the world’s mangrove forests, making the country a major focus for blue carbon restoration, conservation and coastal resilience.

The partnership builds on CIP’s existing work in Indonesia through the Pesisir Biru Nusantara: An Indonesian Mangrove Restoration Project, which the company has been developing since 2023.

The project covers coastlines and river deltas across Indonesia and aims to restore 10,000 hectares of degraded mangroves, generate about 140,000 carbon credits annually and benefit more than 2,000 local community members.

The project is also designed to restore habitat for endangered species, including the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) and long-tailed grey macaque (Macaca fascicularis).

Blueyou has worked for more than two decades on sustainable seafood systems, fisheries and aquaculture programs across Southeast Asia. The company said its regenerative approach seeks to link healthy marine ecosystems with stronger coastal economies.

“Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture offers a unique opportunity to restore mangroves while at the same time improving livelihoods of local communities through higher aquaculture productivity,” Jonas Walker, General Manager of Blueyou Impact and Head of Aquaculture, said.

Walker said an estimated 1 million hectares of coastal areas located in former mangrove forests could be suitable for integrated mangrove aquaculture. He said carbon finance could help scale such projects. ***
