Chandra Asri’s Recycled Plastic Used for Plastic Asphalt at Java 9 & 10 Power Plant

Ecobiz.asia — Indonesian petrochemical producer PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk has supplied recycled plastic material for plastic asphalt used in road construction within the operational area of the Java 9 and 10 Coal-Fired Power Plant, operated by PT Indo Raya Tenaga.

The recycled plastic product, marketed under the CIRCLO brand, is being used as part of an asphalt mixture for several hundred metres of road within the power plant complex.

The initiative is expected to divert up to 3,200 kilograms of plastic waste from landfills, reflecting efforts to support circular economy practices by reintroducing post-consumer plastic into the value chain as a material that enhances the strength and durability of asphalt.

CIRCLO has been commercially produced and supplied since 2025 as shredded recycled plastic designed for plastic asphalt applications. The product is developed in collaboration with recycling industry partners and marketed through PT Chandra Trading Nusantara, a subsidiary responsible for licensing and commercialisation of the circular economy product.

Managing Director of the Indo Raya Tenaga project Steve Adrianto said the use of plastic asphalt represents a practical step toward integrating sustainability principles into the company’s operational infrastructure.

“As an energy provider, we recognise the importance of ensuring that every aspect of our operations considers environmental impact, including in the construction and maintenance of infrastructure within our operational areas,” he said on Thursday (March 12, 2026).

Research by Indonesia’s Ministry of Public Works in 2017 found that plastic asphalt can improve road stability and durability while extending the service life of road structures compared with conventional asphalt.

Edi Rivai, director of legal, external relations and circular economy at Chandra Asri, said the company continues to promote circular economy practices through collaboration across sectors, including recycling businesses and industrial partners.

“The utilisation of CIRCLO for asphalt mixtures at PT Indo Raya Tenaga demonstrates how circular solutions can be applied in practical ways to meet industry needs while delivering environmental and economic value,” he said.

The production and processing of CIRCLO also involve informal waste collectors and local communities working with recycling partners in the plastic waste collection chain, creating additional economic opportunities while strengthening the circular economy ecosystem.

Chandra Asri said the recycled plastic material is expected to be adopted more widely in infrastructure development as industries seek to integrate sustainability principles through plastic asphalt applications. ***
