Ecobiz.asia — Indonesia and the United Kingdom have signed a letter of intent (LoI) to strengthen cooperation on environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.

The LoI was signed in Rio de Janeiro, Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2025), by Indonesian Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq and Amanda Berry CBE, CEO of The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales.

The agreement aims to expand collaboration in tackling transnational environmental crimes, supporting sustainable development, and raising public awareness on conservation.

“The Royal Foundation’s support strengthens our capacity to protect Indonesia’s extraordinary biodiversity and combat environmental crimes,” Hanif said in a statement. “Environmental protection is not only a national issue but a shared global responsibility,” he added.

Berry said the partnership reflects the need for collective global action to safeguard nature. “Indonesia is home to some of the world’s most vital ecosystems. Through cross-sector collaboration, we can build stronger capacity and synergy to protect nature for future generations,” she said.

Before the signing, Hanif and Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, representing President Prabowo Subianto, met Prince William to convey the president’s greetings and appreciation for the Royal Family’s commitment to environmental and humanitarian causes.

The LoI signing coincided with the Rio Declaration 2025, adopted by environment ministers and global leaders to reinforce cooperation against illegal logging, mining, wildlife trafficking, and pollution. The declaration also calls for stronger engagement with Indigenous peoples and local communities in protecting ecosystems.
