Ecobiz.asia — Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) has signed a memorandum of understanding with China-based clean energy company GCL Intelligent Energy (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. to explore the development of clean and low-carbon energy projects in Indonesia.
The MoU was signed on Wednesday (Jan. 7, 2026) at GCL Intelligent Energy’s office in Suzhou, China, by Pertamina NRE Chief Executive Officer John Anis and GCL Intelligent Energy (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. Chairman of the Board Zhi Fei.
The cooperation covers potential development of waste-to-energy power plants, renewable energy projects, and gas-based power generation in Indonesia. The partnership is aimed at supporting emissions reduction efforts while strengthening national energy security.
John Anis said the partnership represents a strategic step for Pertamina NRE in accelerating Indonesia’s clean energy transition.
“Collaboration with GCL is a strategic move for Pertamina NRE to accelerate the development of clean energy in Indonesia. We see strong potential in combining GCL’s global experience with Pertamina’s local capabilities and market understanding to deliver sustainable and competitive energy solutions,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zhi Fei said Indonesia is a key strategic market for global clean energy development, particularly as the country accelerates its energy transition agenda.
“We view Indonesia as one of the most strategic markets for global clean energy development. GCL looks forward to leveraging the momentum of Indonesia’s energy transition to build mutually beneficial cooperation with Pertamina NRE, especially in waste-to-energy projects as well as the integration of photovoltaics and energy storage,” Zhi Fei said.
As part of the visit, the Pertamina NRE delegation also toured GCL’s waste-to-energy power generation facilities to observe the application of technology, environmental management systems, and best practices in project operations and management.
Pertamina NRE said the cooperation is expected to serve as an important foundation for advancing clean energy technology innovation and business models that can be implemented in Indonesia, in line with the country’s Net Zero Emissions 2060 target and Pertamina’s role as a key driver of the national energy transition. ***
