Ecobiz.asia — The Indonesian government applies a prudent approach in supporting the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) to ensure the financing scheme aligns with national interests and the country’s climate goals.
The position was conveyed by Edo Mahendra and Silverius Oscar Unggul, Senior Advisors to the Minister of Forestry, along with Krisdianto, Head of the Bureau of Public Relations and International Cooperation, during a meeting with representatives of Systemic, the Project Management Office (PMO) for TFFF, in São Paulo, Brazil.
The discussion took place on the sidelines of Indonesia’s preparations for the UN Climate Conference (COP30) in Belém.
“Indonesia supports TFFF as an innovative financing scheme with a noble goal to protect tropical forests through an economic approach,” Edo Mahendra said on Tuesday (Nov 4, 2025).
He added that Indonesia’s support is in line with the country’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 target, which aims to make the forestry sector a net carbon sink by 2030.
TFFF is a global financing initiative designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of tropical forest ecosystems, the world’s largest carbon sinks in order to maintain global climate stability. The scheme provides results-based incentives for tropical countries to prevent deforestation and forest degradation.
The facility applies a blended finance mechanism, combining public and private funds, with potential financing of up to US$125 billion to support forest conservation and sustainable economic development.
During the meeting, Felipe from Systemic explained that TFFF has been in development for more than two decades and has now reached its latest iteration, TFFF version 3.1, which places greater emphasis on empowering Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs).
According to the Ministry of Forestry, Indonesia will continue to study the facility’s governance and financing mechanisms to ensure that principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness are fully upheld before committing to deeper participation. ***
