Ecobiz.asia — Guyana has invited Indonesia to join the Forest Climate Leaders’ Partnership (FCLP) during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the UNFCCC COP30 climate negotiations in Belém, Brazil, on Wednesday (Nov. 19, 2025).
The meeting was attended by Guyana’s Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat and Advisor to the President Kevin Hogan, and received by the Indonesian delegation led by the Forestry Ministry’s Senior Advisor on Climate Change Haruni Krisnawati, accompanied by Head of Public Relations and International Cooperation Bureau Krisdianto and Director of Tenure Conflict Resolution and Customary Forests Julmansyah.
Bharrat said Guyana, as FCLP co-chair, hopes Indonesia will join as a full member, citing Indonesia’s extensive experience in tropical forest management and its influential role in global forest diplomacy.
“FCLP currently has 36 member countries, both developed and developing. Indonesia has strong forest governance practices and can serve as a role model for other members,” Bharrat said.
He added that the Partnership has updated its mandate and approach, including a shift in mission toward “halt and reverse forest loss,” which he said is more inclusive of diverse national forest management policies. The revised mandate will be further discussed in follow-up exchanges with Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry.
Bharrat also noted that FCLP will hold its biennial meeting in Guyana in May 2026 and expressed hope that Indonesia will attend as a member.
Responding to the invitation, Krisdianto conveyed Indonesia’s appreciation and noted that Indonesia previously participated as an observer at COP27 in Egypt but has not yet decided on membership. He said the proposal would be conveyed to the Minister of Forestry for further consideration.
Indonesia requested that FCLP submit a formal letter to the Minister detailing the organization’s updated mandate and membership request. Guyana also expressed interest in strengthening cooperation and knowledge sharing with Indonesia on sustainable forest management. ***
