Verra’s CCS Methodology Secures ICVCM Approval Under Core Carbon Principles

Ecobiz.asia – Verra’s methodology for carbon capture and storage (CCS) and its accompanying modules have been approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) under its Core Carbon Principles (CCPs), adding a technology-based approach to Verra’s portfolio of CCP-approved methodologies.

The approval covers Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) VM0049 Carbon Capture and Storage, v1.0, which sets criteria and procedures for quantifying greenhouse gas emission reductions and carbon dioxide removals from projects that capture CO2 and store it permanently.

“Carbon capture and storage is one of the hardest, most technically demanding technologies in the market, and it has to be done right,” Verra CEO Mandy Rambharos said in a statement issued Monday (Sept. 28, 2026).

“The ICVCM’s approval confirms that VM0049 and its accompanying modules meet the highest bar for integrity in the industry, giving buyers and governments confidence in VCS projects that apply an approach essential to reaching net zero,” she said.

VM0049 provides a globally applicable framework for technology-based CCS projects and uses a modular structure designed to allow flexibility and scalability.

Project developers can combine different approaches to carbon capture, transportation and storage based on the configuration of individual projects. The methodology can also accommodate project expansion, shared pipeline and storage infrastructure, and the adoption of emerging technologies.

The CCP-approved modules cover direct air capture (DAC) through VMD0056, CO2 transport through VMD0057, CO2 storage through VMD0058, and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) through VMD0059.

VM0049 also includes requirements governing the electricity used to operate carbon capture systems.

Projects relying on renewable electricity must demonstrate that the electricity comes from new renewable sources developed specifically to serve the CCS project, rather than from existing renewable generation, under the methodology.

Rambharos said expanding the range of credible carbon credit methodologies was important for supporting climate action across different sectors.

“Tackling climate change will take every tool in the toolbox. More credible credits in more sectors means more impactful climate action,” she said. ***
