Pertamina NRE Issues New Carbon Credits, Sells More Than 90%

Ecobiz.asia — Indonesia’s Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) has issued a new batch of carbon credits totaling 35,475 tonnes of CO₂e from its biogas power plant (PLTBg) in the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone.

About 90.4% of the credits, or 32,060 tonnes of CO₂e, have already been sold to several domestic companies across the banking, trading and extractive industries.

“We did not expect this newly issued batch to be absorbed so quickly by the market. This shows how strong carbon credit demand is in Indonesia,” Pertamina NRE CEO John Anis said on Monday (Nov. 24, 2025).

He said the company is optimistic that Indonesia’s carbon market will grow rapidly as regulatory clarity improves.

Pertamina NRE noted rising interest from businesses and the public in offsetting emissions. John also welcomed the government’s mutual recognition agreements (MRAs) with international carbon standards Gold Standard and Verra, which he said would open wider access for Indonesia in global markets.

The Sei Mangkei biogas facility, operating since 2020, is a collaboration between Pertamina NRE and state-run PTPN III. Credits from the project are generated through the processing of palm oil mill effluent (POME) using covered-lagoon technology to produce renewable electricity.

Pertamina NRE previously sold out its first carbon credit issuance of 864,209 tonnes of CO₂e from the Lahendong geothermal units 5 and 6. The company’s carbon trading activities support the development of Indonesia’s carbon exchange, IDXCarbon, launched in September 2023.

The company plans to increase its carbon credit issuances from its clean-energy portfolio. It will soon release Volume 3 credits from the Lahendong geothermal units, estimated at 465,131 tonnes of CO₂e. ***
