Ecobiz.asia – As the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returned to Jakarta for Round 12 of the 2025 season, global technology firm ABB spotlighted its role in supporting Indonesia’s clean energy transition through landmark electrification projects across the country.

ABB, which has operated in Indonesia for over three decades, is using the same precision and high-performance technologies found in Formula E to support sustainable infrastructure development in the archipelago. The company’s innovations are now powering renewable energy projects designed to reduce emissions and increase energy resilience.

“Our involvement in Formula E is a reflection of how ABB technologies can support Indonesia’s future—maximizing performance while enabling a low-carbon economy,” said Gerard Chan, President Director and Country Holding Officer of ABB in Indonesia, on Wednesday (June 18, 2025).

One of ABB’s most significant contributions is the Cirata floating solar farm in West Java, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia and the third largest in the world. Operational since 2023, the 250-hectare facility produces 192 megawatts of clean energy—enough to power over 50,000 homes and offset more than 214,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.

In Phase 1, ABB provided 17 medium-voltage UniGear ZS1 switchgear units equipped with Relion protection relays to ensure safety and reliability. The equipment was designed for scalability as energy demand at the site increases.

Inspired by Cirata’s success, the government is planning more than 60 additional floating solar projects across Indonesia’s lakes and reservoirs.

In addition to solar energy, ABB is also advancing geothermal development. At the Ijen geothermal project in East Java, ABB supplied generators designed to the Top Industrial Efficiency (TIE) standard. The plant, expected to begin operations in 2025, will provide 34.9 MW of clean power to approximately 85,000 households.

ABB has also collaborated with the Kaishan Group since 2015 on geothermal facilities in North Sumatra and East Nusa Tenggara. The company’s high-efficiency synchronous generators play a key role in ensuring reliable, low-cost operations at both sites.

According to ABB, these real-world deployments reflect the same engineering excellence seen on Formula E circuits, where performance, precision, and sustainability converge.

“Projects like Cirata and Ijen are not only critical for Indonesia’s energy transition, but also set an international benchmark,” Chan added. “They show how we can scale proven technologies to support both economic development and climate goals.”

After Jakarta, the Formula E championship will continue with Rounds 13 and 14 in Berlin on July 12–13. ***
