Ecobiz.asia — Indonesia and Japan have strengthened bilateral cooperation in the environmental sector through the 2nd Indonesia–Japan Environment Week in Jakarta, as both countries seek to address growing global environmental challenges.
The event marked the second edition of the forum following its inaugural meeting in Tokyo in 2024, reinforcing environmental diplomacy between the two countries on issues including waste management, climate change, air quality, and the circular economy.
Senior Advisor for International Relations and Environmental Diplomacy at Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment Erik Teguh Primiantoro said Indonesia-Japan relations had evolved into a strategic partnership in responding to increasingly complex environmental challenges.
“Indonesia-Japan cooperation is not only technical but also strategic in driving sustainable environmental transformation. Japan’s experience and technology, combined with Indonesia’s potential and needs, create a strong foundation for delivering concrete solutions,” Erik said on Monday (May 11, 2026).
Meanwhile, Japan’s Vice Minister for Global Environmental Affairs Doi Kentaro welcomed Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening environmental collaboration and advancing sustainable initiatives.
“We are very pleased to build a better future together. This year marks an important milestone in strengthening cooperation, particularly in developing innovative environmental solutions,” Doi said.
Through the forum, both countries aim to promote knowledge exchange, capacity building, and the development of environmentally friendly technologies that can be implemented across multiple sectors.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment said collaboration with Japan could accelerate the adoption of green technologies and the development of environmentally sustainable industries in Indonesia, in line with the country’s goals to reduce environmental pressures and strengthen the green economy.
In addition to bringing together government representatives from both countries, the 2nd Indonesia–Japan Environment Week also served as a platform for businesses, academics, and development partners to strengthen cross-sector collaboration in support of sustainable development initiatives. ***
