Ecobiz.asia — Danantara Indonesia has appointed two international companies to operate waste-to-energy power plants in Bekasi and Denpasar as part of efforts to strengthen urban waste management while expanding sustainable energy generation.
In an announcement on Friday (March 6, 2026), Danantara named Wangneng Environment Co., Ltd. as the operator of the waste-to-energy facility in Bekasi, while Zhejiang Weiming Environment Protection Co., Ltd. was selected to operate a similar plant in Denpasar.
The appointments followed a partner selection process involving several international companies with experience in the waste-to-energy sector.
The projects form part of the implementation of Presidential Regulation No. 109/2025, which aims to accelerate the development of waste-to-energy facilities in several cities across Indonesia.
Through the programme, the government seeks to strengthen urban waste management, reduce reliance on landfills, and increase the utilisation of municipal waste as a source of energy.
Pandu Sjahrir, Chief Investment Officer of Danantara Indonesia, said the appointment of the operators marks a key step in ensuring that the waste-to-energy facilities are managed with high operational and safety standards.
“This announcement marks an important step in ensuring that waste-to-energy facilities are managed with the highest standards of operational reliability, safety, and accountability,” Pandu said.
He added that the selected operators are required to establish consortia with regionally owned enterprises and Indonesian local companies to facilitate technology transfer and strengthen domestic industry capacity.
Danantara also emphasised the importance of strong project governance from the early stages, including a transparent and risk-based partner selection process.
Going forward, Danantara will work with local governments and other stakeholders to ensure that the waste-to-energy projects can effectively reduce waste volumes while generating cleaner electricity. ***
