Ecobiz.asia — Indonesia’s state energy firm PT Pertamina (Persero) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with POSCO International Corporation to explore cooperation in low-carbon technologies, including carbon capture and blue hydrogen development.
The MoU was signed by Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri and POSCO International CEO Kye-In Lee in South Korea on April 1, 2026.
Under the agreement, both companies will explore the development and deployment of low-carbon technologies, including carbon capture and storage (CCS), carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), as well as blue hydrogen and ammonia. The partnership will also assess opportunities in renewable energy development.
The collaboration forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Indonesia–South Korea energy cooperation during President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to South Korea.
Simon said the partnership represents a strategic step to accelerate the development of Indonesia’s low-carbon technology ecosystem while unlocking carbon market opportunities.
“The development of CCS/CCUS, blue hydrogen, and renewable energy is expected to support emissions reduction targets while creating new economic opportunities,” he said in a statement as quoted Thursday (April 2, 2026).
In addition to technical aspects, the cooperation will also include non-technical studies to ensure effective implementation, covering regulatory frameworks and business models.
The Pertamina–POSCO partnership is expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in achieving emissions reduction targets and supporting Indonesia’s net zero emission (NZE) ambitions. ***
