Transjakarta Targets 100% Electric Bus Fleet by 2030 Under USD 350 Million Investment Plan

Ecobiz.asia — Jakarta’s city bus operator Transjakarta plans to fully electrify its fleet by 2030 under a roadmap requiring a total investment of around IDR 5.6 trillion (USD 350 million).

Speaking at the Indonesia Sustainability Forum 2025, Transjakarta Finance Director Mayangsari Dian Irwantari said the company aims to make half of its fleet emission-free by 2027 as part of the capital’s drive toward cleaner public transport.

“All of Transjakarta’s vehicles must be 100% electric by 2030, and by 2027 it should be at least 50%,” she said, Friday (Oct 10, 2025)

The plan follows Jakarta Governor Regulation No. 1053/2022, which mandates the acceleration of electric-bus adoption within Transjakarta’s network to support the city’s net-zero and air-quality goals.

Transjakarta has so far deployed 300 electric buses, including 100 low-deck units introduced in 2023 and 200 high-deck models added in 2024. The company targets another 300 units in 2025, followed by 435 in 2026 and 563 in 2027.

Investment spending is set at IDR 618 billion (USD 38 million) in 2025, IDR 1.5 trillion (USD 95 million) in 2026, and IDR 3.5 trillion (USD 220 million) in 2027, in line with vehicle procurement, charging infrastructure rollout, and operator readiness.

Mayangsari said the transition is guided by a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) approach, with electric buses expected to become cheaper to operate than diesel models in the long term.

Transjakarta currently works with 23 operators, half of them cooperatives, posing financing challenges for smaller partners. The company is coordinating with lenders to improve access to credit and enhance project bankability.

“It is much better than several years ago. Together with financial institutions, we are improving the bankability of cooperatives,” Mayangsari said.

The electrification program is part of Jakarta’s broader effort to curb pollution and modernize urban transport, with Transjakarta operating one of the world’s largest bus rapid transit systems serving over 800,000 passengers daily. ***
