Indonesia, Japan Seek Closer Clean Energy, Critical Minerals Ties in Tokyo Talks

Ecobiz.asia — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation in energy, critical minerals, and industrial development during a bilateral meeting in Tokyo.

In a joint statement following the meeting at Akasaka Palace on Tuesday (March 31, 2026), both leaders agreed to expand cooperation across economic, energy, and security sectors.

Prabowo emphasized the importance of accelerating the ratification and implementation of the amended Indonesia–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IEPA) to unlock concrete collaboration.

“We will work hard to expedite the ratification and implementation of the IEPA amendment protocol,” he said.

Indonesia also signaled broader opportunities for Japanese investment, particularly in the development of critical minerals and rare earths, as well as downstream industrialization.

In the energy sector, the government is pushing for stronger collaboration in renewable energy and nuclear power development as part of its long-term energy transition strategy.

At the regional level, Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to advancing the Asia Zero Emission Community initiative, including encouraging greater participation from Japanese companies in energy projects across Indonesia.

He also highlighted efforts to accelerate the completion of key projects such as Legok Nangka and Sarulla through debottlenecking measures to ensure optimal operations.

In the upstream oil and gas sector, Indonesia welcomed investment from INPEX Corporation in the Masela Block gas project and pushed for faster project realization following prolonged delays.

Beyond energy, both countries agreed to expand cooperation in education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. ***
