The IA follows a memorandum of understanding signed by both parties in 2024 on cooperation in environmental and forestry issues.

In his remarks, Ristianto expressed appreciation for the constructive collaboration between the two parties throughout the preparation of the agreement.

“This agreement reflects our shared commitment to strengthening REDD+ implementation,” Ristianto said.

The partnership with UNEP is considered aligned with Indonesia’s commitment to achieving its Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 target and Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

Meanwhile, Martin Krause said forests are among the key solutions to addressing global challenges, ranging from carbon storage and biodiversity protection to strengthening environmental resilience and supporting local communities.

Under the agreement, both parties will strengthen cooperation in several strategic areas, including technical support for REDD+ results-based financing mobilization, carbon market readiness and Article 6 implementation under the Paris Agreement, development of social forestry and community-based enterprises, and enhancing the forestry sector’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
