Ecobiz.asia — Indonesia and the United Kingdom have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on climate cooperation to accelerate the transition toward a low-emission and equitable economy.
The MoU was signed by Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Protection Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq and UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil.
“This partnership between Indonesia and the United Kingdom is not merely an intergovernmental agreement, but a shared commitment to the planet’s future. Indonesia stands ready to be a strategic global partner in driving real solutions to the climate crisis,” Hanif said in a statement, Friday (Nov. 7, 2025)
The agreement strengthens cooperation on climate change mitigation and adaptation, transparent carbon governance, and integration of low-carbon development across multiple levels of government. Hanif said the partnership would be implemented through knowledge exchange, technical training, and joint projects at both national and local levels.
“Nature-based and technology-based solutions must go hand in hand to significantly reduce emissions,” he said.
Miliband said collaboration with Indonesia shows that climate action can advance alongside economic growth. “This partnership will unlock innovation, create green jobs, and enhance people’s wellbeing,” he said.
Under the MoU, both countries agreed to establish a Joint Steering Committee (JSC) to coordinate, monitor, and evaluate programs. The committee will promote interministerial and institutional collaboration, expand investment in green technology, and align efforts with the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The UK expressed strong interest in cooperation on energy, forestry, and land-use mitigation (FOLU), as well as carbon governance to support sustainable supply chains. Indonesia, meanwhile, is focusing on developing a Draft Climate Change Law, strengthening a high-integrity carbon market, and advancing biodiversity credits.
Hanif said the partnership also supports the implementation of Presidential Regulation No. 110/2025 on Carbon Economic Value, which serves as the main legal basis for the development of Indonesia’s national carbon market.
“We are optimistic this cooperation will accelerate emission reduction targets, strengthen market integrity, and drive national green economic growth,” he added. ***
