Ecobiz.asia — Indonesia and Japan have agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation in the forestry sector to support climate change mitigation, land rehabilitation, and the development of world-class conservation areas.
The commitment was highlighted during a meeting between Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni and Senior Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Yoshifumi Yoshikawa in Tokyo on Monday (March 30, 2026).
The meeting follows President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to enhance bilateral ties between Indonesia and Japan, particularly in the forestry sector.
Raja Juli said the government remains committed to climate action and accelerating land rehabilitation as part of efforts to ensure environmental sustainability while improving community welfare.
“Indonesia is also promoting the development of conservation areas into world-class national parks, with strong biodiversity protection, governance, and ecotourism,” he said in a statement.
The Forestry Ministry also invited JICA to strengthen collaboration under the World Mangrove Center initiative, which is envisioned as a global platform for mangrove rehabilitation, research, and innovation based on nature-based solutions.
JICA welcomed the initiatives and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Indonesia through technical cooperation, financing, and knowledge and technology transfer.
The agency’s support has contributed to sustainable forest management and institutional capacity building in Indonesia’s forestry sector, according to the ministry.
The meeting marks a further step in strengthening bilateral cooperation to address global challenges, including climate change and environmental degradation, and forms part of President Prabowo’s state visit to Japan. ***
