Green Carbon, PT PIL Sign MoU to Develop Mangrove-Based Carbon Projects in Indonesia

Ecobiz.asia — Japan-based carbon project developer Green Carbon Co., Ltd. has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indonesia’s PT Pesisir Indah Lestari (PT PIL) to advance mangrove restoration and blue carbon initiatives in Indonesia.

The agreement, announced in a statement as quoted on Wednesday (April 1, 2026), aims to strengthen collaboration on nature-based solutions to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Under the partnership, the two parties will conduct joint research and project development, including identifying at least 1,000 hectares of potential sites for mangrove restoration through field and desktop assessments.

The collaboration will also cover blue carbon accounting to estimate carbon stored in biomass and sediment, as well as projections of carbon sequestration potential over a period of up to 35 years.

In addition, the project will prioritize community engagement through the development of plantation management plans that support local livelihoods and participation.

The five-year agreement marks the initial phase of a longer-term commitment to developing scalable mangrove-based carbon projects in Indonesia’s coastal areas.

PT PIL, established in 2019, focuses on community-based environmental conservation and sustainable development across Indonesia’s coastal regions.
