Gold Standard-Certified, BKN Offers Community-Driven Biogas Carbon Credits to Global Buyers

Ecobiz.asia — Indonesia’s PT Biru Karbon Nusantara (BKN) is marketing Gold Standard-certified carbon credits generated from its Indonesia Domestic Biogas Program (IDBP), positioning the project as a community-focused climate solution that improves rural livelihoods while cutting emissions.

BKN Director Chabi Batur Romzini said the biogas programme, certified under the Gold Standard since 2013, aims not only to deliver verified emission reductions but also to channel direct social and economic benefits to farmers and rural households.

“Our vision is simple: turning waste into real benefits for people, communities, and the environment,” she said during a presentation at the Seller Meet Buyer session at the Indonesia Pavilion at COP30 UNFCCC in Belém, Brazil, on Monday (Nov. 17, 2025)

Indonesia faces rising methane emissions from the livestock sector, with cattle populations forecast to reach 26 million by 2035 and 90 percent of manure unmanaged. Methane from livestock waste—around 65 percent of its composition—makes the sector one of the country’s largest methane sources, with emissions projected to hit 21 million tonnes of CO₂e by 2035.

Chabi Batur said household-scale biogas offers a direct solution, particularly for millions of families still reliant on firewood for cooking.

IDBP, which began in 2009 had installed nearly 30,000 biodigesters across more than 3,000 villages in 21 provinces as of October 2025. The programme has provided clean energy access to 163,000 people and created over 1,400 local jobs.

Cumulatively, IDBP has reduced more than 584,000 tonnes of CO₂e as of August 2025, with each biodigester cutting emissions by roughly 2.5 tonnes of CO₂e annually.

Beyond emission reductions, the programme promotes agricultural resilience through the use of bioslurry, an organic fertiliser that lowers farmers’ spending on chemical fertilisers and LPG while improving crop yields, according to BKN’s annual impact survey.

“Buying carbon credits from IDBP means expanding biogas access for more farming households. It is not only a climate action—it is an investment in communities,” Chabi Batur said.

She added that part of the revenue from carbon credit sales is reinvested into rural communities through subsidies for biodigester construction.

“With every credit purchased, buyers directly support clean energy, food security, and poverty reduction in Indonesia’s rural areas,” she said.

BKN is seeking global buyers committed to high-integrity carbon credits that deliver measurable social benefits. ***
