Hashim Reveals JETP Will Be Terminated

Ecobiz.asia – Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, the Indonesian President’s Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, stated that the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) program will be terminated.

“There are JETP programs worth $20 billion that will be abolished by the Trump administration,” said Hashim during the ESG Sustainable Forum 2025 on Friday (Jan 31, 2025).

Hashim stated that no funds had been disbursed by the U.S. government to support Indonesia’s energy transition.

“For the past two years, not a single dollar has been disbursed by the American government. It turns out there was a lot of talk but no action. The $5 billion grant within the $20 billion package does not actually exist. There is a clause in JETP stating that the $5 billion grant would be given if funds were available. But when we asked when it could be disbursed, they said, ‘Oh, sorry, it’s not available,’” Hashim explained.

One of the key programs within JETP’s scope of work is the early retirement of coal-fired power plants (PLTU). However, this initiative contradicts the government’s future plans.

Hashim emphasized that the government will not shut down coal power plants by 2040 and is instead formulating a general plan to ensure a balanced and environmentally friendly power supply.

“If we shut down coal-fired power plants, our economy will collapse. That’s why we will maintain a balanced approach. After 2040, there will be no new coal-fired power plants—that’s what Mr. Prabowo, myself, and the government mean,” Hashim stated. ***
