Ecobiz.asia — Indonesia has invited Japan to invest in forestry-based carbon projects as part of efforts to strengthen nature-based solutions in tackling global climate change.

The proposal was conveyed by Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni during a bilateral meeting with Japan’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Suzuki Norikazu in Tokyo on Tuesday (March 31, 2026).

Indonesia is encouraging Japanese private sector participation in forestry carbon projects, particularly through afforestation and reforestation activities, including within national park areas.

The move aligns with growing opportunities in the voluntary carbon market (VCM) following the introduction of Indonesia’s carbon pricing policy framework.

Raja Juli said the long-standing cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, including through projects supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency, provides a strong foundation for advancing sustainable forest management and addressing climate change challenges.

“Such cooperation has become an important foundation to strengthen sustainable forest governance and respond to global climate challenges,” he said.

The Japanese government, through its Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, views Indonesia as a strategic partner, particularly in tropical forest management and climate mitigation programs.

As part of its support, Japan plans to deploy two experts in April 2026 to assist a sustainable mangrove management project coordinated by JICA.

Japan also expressed support for expanding the implementation of the Joint Crediting Mechanism in the forestry sector as part of joint efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
