Ecobiz.asia – Indonesia’s state-owned energy company PT Pertamina (Persero) is exploring the use of urban fat, oil and grease (FOG) waste as an alternative feedstock for biofuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), through a partnership with Jakarta’s regional wastewater management company PT PAL Jaya.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday (Oct. 12) at Jakarta City Hall to assess the potential use of FOG generated or managed by PAL Jaya as a feedstock for biofuel development.
The agreement was signed by Pertamina Deputy President Director Oki Muraza and PAL Jaya President Director Untung Suryadi.
The initiative seeks to connect the energy and wastewater management sectors through a circular economy approach, in which waste is treated as a potential resource rather than simply a material requiring disposal.
For Pertamina, the initiative forms part of its efforts to develop lower-carbon businesses by exploring alternative resources and waste-to-energy opportunities. The companies will conduct further assessments before determining the potential for more concrete cooperation.
“Signing this memorandum of understanding is part of Pertamina’s initiatives toward a clean energy transition, while supporting efforts to achieve low-carbon emissions targets sustainably,” Oki said.
The assessment is expected to help both companies identify opportunities to create added value from waste through sustainable resource utilization.
However, the agreement marks an initial exploration of FOG as a potential feedstock. Further studies will be needed to establish its suitability and the feasibility of developing biofuel, including SAF, from the waste stream. ***
