Ecobiz.asia — PT Pertamina (Persero) and LanzaTech have signed a partnership to explore low-carbon energy solutions by converting urban waste into fuel through waste-to-fuel technology.
The collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed during the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, United States. The agreement was signed by Pertamina Vice President Director Oki Muraza and LanzaTech Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Holmgren.
The partnership will focus on developing technology to convert municipal waste into ethanol through a fermentation process. The initiative is expected to support both waste management solutions and alternative energy development in Indonesia.
Oki Muraza said Indonesia is currently facing two major challenges: rising urban waste volumes and growing demand for clean energy. He noted that national waste generation has reached around 56,600 tons per day, while ethanol demand is projected to increase to 2.4 million kiloliters by 2030.
“Through this collaboration, we aim to turn challenges into opportunities by converting waste into economically valuable fuel while supporting the energy transition,” Oki said in a statement on Wednesday (May 6, 2026).
He added that the cooperation could also support the development of a circular economy value chain, ranging from waste processing and ethanol production to the use of derivative products for fuel blending and chemical industry feedstock.
LanzaTech, a United States-based technology company, develops microbial fermentation technology that converts carbon-rich waste gases into fuels and value-added chemicals. The company’s circular economy approach is considered capable of helping industries reduce emissions while creating new economic value.
Jennifer Holmgren said LanzaTech’s modular technology is designed to integrate with existing infrastructure, including refineries and municipal waste management systems.
With commercial experience in multiple countries, she said the technology is expected to support innovation-driven clean energy development while strengthening domestic energy security. ***
